The latest round of the Shanghai Teacher and School International Survey (TALIS) 2024, hosted and implemented by the Institute of International and Comparative Education from SHNU School of Education, Shanghai Normal University, was released on October 7. The survey was completed in April 2024 with data collected from principals of 205 junior high schools and 4,078 teachers in Shanghai.
The average age of junior high school teachers in Shanghai is 39.5 years, with 53.3% of Shanghai teachers using artificial intelligence to accomplish various teaching tasks, significantly higher than the OECD average of 36.3%. Shanghai teachers highly recognize the positive impacts of digital technology and AI, believing that AI helps develop learning interest (96.8%), enhance planning and monitoring skills (95.5%), promote effective collaboration (94.7%), and improve academic performance (93.4%).
Over the past decade, the proportion of people who believe the teaching profession is respected in society has steadily increased by 24.4 percentage points, with 70% of teachers holding this view, surpassing most countries and regions.
